Ranking All The Two Time Winners Of The Newbery Award
The best of the best?
The Newbery Award has been given out by the American Library Associate for outstanding children’s literature since 1922. Along the way, only a handful of authors have won this medal more than once for more than one book.
In personal judgement as a vivacious child reader, a vivacious adult reader, and with many years as a children’s librarian under my belt, I will ranking the double-winning authors from least to most notable based on the impact and staying power of their works.
(This will not be counting Newbery honorees, which would change the list entirely. There are some prolific nominees who have never won once.)
6) Joseph Krumgold
Won for And Now Miguel in 1954 and Onion John in 1959
Maybe you will think it is unfair for me to rank Joseph Krumgold last when I have not read either of his books. But here’s the thing… that itself is a testament.
Despite my credentials above (active reader, children’s librarian)I have not read Krumgold whether as a middle school literature class assignment, a book rec from a librarian to me as a child, or choosing to pick it up as an adult because I’ve heard good things about it…
